Gar-Field DECA Students Achieve Highest Chapter Certification

Marketing students at Gar-Field High School have turned practical business skills into a business enterprise that has brought the school's DECA chapter the highest certification possible. The chapter is chartered as a Small Business Enterprise (SBE) and operates the school's store.

The store is a learning lab for Marketing students who are enrolled in Advanced Marketing. There are currently four students who staff the store every other day during lunch periods. The school-based enterprise is just one aspect of Gar-Field’s DECA activities.

“We have over 50 student members who have entered competitions at the district level and 27 students who will compete at the State level,” said Marilyn Clark, marketing teacher and DECA Advisor and District Advisor. “The students who work in the store will be recognized at the state and national levels for their accomplishment,” said Clark.

The students who work in the store are Regine Bumper, who is also the District President for DECA District 11; Juan Vazquez, Gar-Field's DECA President; Lydia Kingo; and Trace Graves. Gar-Field is one of 21 high schools in the state with a Gold Certified school store, and the only one in PWCS.

Up to three Gar-Field High School students and an advisor are invited to attend the SBE Academy to be held at the International Career Development Conference in Orlando, Florida this April. This exclusive Academy is open to only Gold Certified and Gold Re-certified DECA SBEs. Participants will attend professional development sessions and be recognized for their achievement during the SBE Academy Awards session on April 26. Students who attend the SBE Academy also will qualify to compete in the SBE competition focused on Human Resources Management.
