Shop for School Tax-Free before School Begins; Virginia Sales Tax Holiday is August 1–3
July 21, 2014

School supplies selling for $20 or less per item and articles of clothing, including footwear, selling for $100 or less per item will be exempt from sales tax during the Virginia Sales Tax Holiday scheduled for Friday, August 1 through Sunday, August 3.

Families with children in Prince William County Public Schools are encouraged to take advantage of these savings to prepare their students for the upcoming school year. Check your school’s Web site or call your school for a copy of the 2014–15 supply list. For a directory of schools, go to and click on “Schools,” then select the directory by grade level.

Beginning July 28, SPARK, the Education Foundation for PWCS, will collect school supplies at the Kelly Leadership Center to help ensure that all student have the back-to-school basics they need to return to school ready to learn. The Kelly Leadership Center is located at 14715 Bristow Road, Manassas, VA 20112
Most-needed items include backpacks, 3-ring binders, tabbed dividers, folders with pockets, spiral notebooks, loose-leaf paper, colored pencils, pencil boxes/bags, tissues, hand sanitizer, marble composition books, ink pens (blue or black), No. 2 pencils, washable markers, crayons, highlighters, glue/glue sticks, rounded scissors, index cards, and graph paper.

Senior Portraits July 29-31
Victor O'Neill Studios will be on-site July 29, 30, and 31 to conduct Class of 2015 Senior Portraits. All sessions will take place in the Auditorium. Appointment cards will be mailed home. You may call the Main Office to confirm your appointment. Please be prepared in advance should you need any props to be included in your portrait. All ordering information will be included with your appointment card.

Welcome Mr. Cortash!

Mr. Jeremy Cortash grew up in Rochester, New York and received both his Bachelor of Science in Social Science and Masters of Secondary Education from Niagara University. He relocated to the Northern Virginia area in 2007 and received a Masters of Education in Administration and Supervision from George Mason University in 2012.
Mr. Cortash taught Social Studies and the Students Advisory Leadership Council at Woodbridge High School.  In 2013 Mr. Cortash transitioned into administration as an Assistant Principal and the Dean of Students at Annandale High School in the Fairfax County Public School System where he led the ESOL department.

All visitors and students must enter Gar-Field High School using Door #1 by the main office.  It is on the Baseball/Tennis Court side of the building.

New Student Orientation Program

For all students entering the Class of 2018:
The New Student Orientation Program will be held on Tuesday, August 19, 2014.  

For all parents of students entering the Class of 2018:

Please note that our New Student Orientation Program is designed for only new students to attend.  To help answer parent questions, we are offering a Parent Information Open House on the same day from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in our school’s auditorium lobby.  Parents will be able to interact individually with school administrators, school counselors, the school nurse, cafeteria manager, director of student activities, International Baccalaureate Coordinator, purchase physical education uniforms, place money on their student’s lunch account, learn about the school’s PTSO, and tour the building.


So that we can appropriately plan, please RSVP by calling Ms. Lowther at 703.730.7143 or e-mailing her at by August 5, 2014.  Please indicate your name and your t-shirt size.

Alumni Walkway

The Alumni Walkway in Ralph Burnett Stadium has been installed and awaits your brick!  The walkway will be inscribed with the names of Gar-Field students, Alumni, Teachers, Faculty, Clubs and Groups.

By reserving a brick, you can show generations to come what Gar-Field means to you.  In addition, you are helping the student athletes at Gar-Field.  All Alumni Walkway proceeds will help support the Gar-Field Athletic Program.

This commemorative DVD will allow you to relive your special day for years to come. The entire ceremony will be recorded and each graduate will be shown receiving a diploma.

Graduation Photos
Victor O'Neill Studios will be photographing each senior as they receive their diploma at graduation. Within just a few days, graduates and their families will be able to go online to view/order their pictures.  The graduation picture, candid photographs and senior panoramic will be available for purchase. Just go to
  Choose "Senior Graduation", find your school, then find the pictures you like!

Parent Portal News

Effective June 9, parents who currently have a Parent Portal user account will no longer be able to edit their contact information online. Changes can be made by contacting their school office.

The Parent Portal will display student grades and contact information for the 2013-14 school year until June 28, when it will go offline for yearly maintenance. The Parent Portal will be back online on July 14. Summer school grades will not be displayed on the Parent Portal.

Classroom Web pages for school year 2013-14 will be available to view during the summer. However, they will go offline August 11. New class Web pages for 2014-15 will go live in August (date to be announced) after student schedules have been finalized for the upcoming school year.

Parents who do not have a Parent Portal user account by June 9 must wait until August to establish their account. School Web sites will announce a date when parents can apply. 


1) Class grades and attendance are updated in Parent Portal every night.
Parents who already have a Parent Portal account are able to edit their emergency contact information. Just a reminder: "Gets mailings for students" should be used only when the parent/guardian(s) live apart from the student. Parent/guardian(s) who live with the student automatically receive student mailings.
3) Parents and Students: Click here for how to change your email address or password.
4) Signed emails for new accounts can be turned into the main office with a picture ID any school day from 7:15 am - 3:45 pm.

Student Parking Permits

All students who drive to Gar-Field High School must have a valid parking permit on the vehicle.  The cost of the parking permit is $100.00.  To obtain a parking permit, fill out the Student Parking Permit Application and bring the completed form to Mr. Russell in the Security Office.

Activity Buses 2013 -2014

Activity buses provide transportation for students who stay after school for academic or extra-curricular activities.

Beginning December 9th, activity buses will leave only at 4:30 pm on Monday through Thursday for academic, athletic, and/or club activities. 

There are NO Activity buses on Friday

Thursday, June 12th, will be the last day for Activity buses.

We welcome your checks at Gar-Field High School.  However, if your check is returned for any reason, we will electronically present it to your bank for the face value plus a $35.00 processing fee.  Any protest or bad check return fee charged by your financial institution, and all other charges, interest, and attorney's fees are your responsibility. This action will be taken without further notice.  
We reserve the right to decline your check.
